The Miqat at Dhul Hulaifah
This is what makes the Madinah to Makkah road different from every other transfer we run. If you are travelling to Makkah for Umrah, you must enter Ihram before crossing the Miqat — and coming from Madinah, your Miqat is Dhul Hulaifah, also known as Abyar Ali. It sits just outside Madinah on the road south, so you reach it within the first twenty minutes or so of the drive.
Every Madinah to Makkah booking includes a stop there. There is a large mosque at the Miqat with washrooms, changing areas and space to pray, so pilgrims arrive in ordinary clothes and continue in Ihram.

- Change into your Ihram garments and make ghusl or wudu if you wish
- Many pilgrims pray two rak’ahs at the mosque before continuing

Many pilgrims prefer to leave after Fajr and arrive in Makkah with most of the day still ahead of them. Overnight departures are equally routine, and the fare is the same whatever the hour.
About This Journey
The route runs south from Madinah on the main highway towards Makkah — roughly 450 km of good, straightforward road with service areas along the way. Driving time is 4.5 to 5 hours, and with the Miqat stop and a break or two most groups are on the road for around six hours door to door.
Tell your driver if you would like to stop for Salah, for the washroom, or to pick up food and drink. Reasonable stops are part of the journey and do not change the agreed fare.
Arriving in Makkah, traffic close to the Haram is heavy around each Salah, and at peak times some streets immediately around it are closed to vehicles. Your driver will take you as close to your hotel as vehicles are permitted — give us the hotel name when you book so the approach can be planned.

The Haramain High Speed Railway connects Madinah and Makkah and is considerably quicker on the moving leg. On this particular route, though, the comparison turns on something other than speed: the train does not stop at the Miqat, so pilgrims travelling by rail generally enter Ihram before boarding at Madinah station.

Families who want the Miqat handled as part of the journey, or who are travelling with children and heavy luggage, generally prefer the car.
