Leaving Makkah for Madinah

Two things are worth settling before you set off, and neither is about the road.

You do not need to be in Ihram for this direction. Pilgrims often ask, because the return journey does require it. Travelling away from Makkah you are not entering the Haram boundary, so there is no Miqat to cross and no Ihram to wear — you travel in ordinary clothes. It is only the Madinah to Makkah direction where your driver stops at the Miqat at Dhul Hulaifah.

Most pilgrims perform a farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah. Whether it is obligatory after Umrah is a point on which scholars differ, and your group leader will advise you; after Hajj it is a different matter. If you intend to perform one, plan the pickup for after it rather than trying to fit it in around a fixed departure — the Haram is busiest around each Salah, and getting back to your hotel and down to the vehicle with luggage takes longer than people expect.

Beyond that there is no deadline on this route. Unlike an airport run there is no check-in to make, so you can leave when it suits you. Many groups set off after Fajr and reach Madinah with the day still ahead of them; others travel overnight and arrive for Fajr at Masjid an-Nabawi. The fare is the same either way.

Pickup From Your Makkah Hotel

Here is how the journey runs from your hotel door:

  1. Tell us your hotel, your travel date and roughly what time you want to leave
  2. Your driver arrives at your hotel, or the nearest point vehicles can reach
  3. Your luggage is loaded and you set off north on the highway
  4. You stop along the way for Salah, food or a rest as you wish
  5. You are dropped at your hotel in Madinah

To confirm your booking, please send us:

  • Your Makkah hotel name
  • Travel date and preferred departure time
  • Your Madinah hotel name
  • Number of passengers
  • Number of bags, including any Zamzam

Hotel access matters at the Makkah end. At peak times some streets immediately around the Haram are closed to traffic, so your driver will meet you at the nearest permitted point rather than at the door. Giving us the hotel name when you book lets that be arranged in advance.

About This Journey

The route runs north from Makkah on the main highway towards Madinah — roughly 450 km of good road, with service areas along the way. Driving time is 4.5 to 5 hours, and with a couple of breaks most groups are on the road for around five and a half.

Tell your driver if you would like to stop for Salah, for the washroom, or to pick up food and drink. Reasonable stops are part of the journey and do not change the agreed fare.

Arriving in Madinah is generally easier than arriving in Makkah — the streets around Masjid an-Nabawi are less constrained, and most hotels can be reached directly. Once you are settled, the historic sites around the city are worth a day of their own; see our Ziyarah tours in Makkah and Madinah.

Makkah to Madinah: Taxi vs Haramain Train

The Haramain High Speed Railway connects Makkah and Madinah and is quicker on the moving leg. Which suits you better depends on your luggage, your group, and whether you would rather travel door to door or plan around a timetable and two station transfers.

Families with young children, heavy luggage and Zamzam, or anyone who would rather not move bags through two stations, generally prefer the car. Pilgrims travelling light, or who value the shorter journey time, often prefer the train. Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this route:

The distance is about 450 km and the drive takes 4.5 to 5 hours. With a couple of stops along the way, most groups are on the road for around five and a half hours door to door.

No. You are travelling away from Makkah rather than towards it, so there is no Miqat to cross on this route and you travel in ordinary clothes. Ihram applies on the return journey — see our Madinah to Makkah transfer, where the driver stops at the Miqat at Dhul Hulaifah.

The current fare for each vehicle is in the fare table above, read live from our rate list. The cost of a taxi from Makkah to Madinah is fixed per vehicle rather than per passenger, and includes fuel, tolls and parking. Message us with your date and group size and we will confirm it before you travel.

Yes, and most pilgrims do. Tell us when you book so the pickup is set for afterwards. The Haram is busiest around each Salah, and getting back to the hotel and down to the vehicle takes longer than expected with luggage. Whether a farewell Tawaf is obligatory after Umrah is a question for your group leader or scholar, not for us — we only need to know your timing.

Whenever suits you. There is no check-in deadline on this route, so unlike an airport transfer the timing is entirely yours. Many groups leave after Fajr and arrive with the day ahead of them; others travel overnight and arrive for Fajr at Masjid an-Nabawi. We run the route 24 hours a day at the same fare.

Yes. Pilgrims commonly stop for Salah, for the washroom, or to buy food and drink at the service areas along the highway. Reasonable stops are part of the journey and do not change the agreed fare.

Yes, as close as vehicles are allowed to go. At peak times some streets immediately around the Haram are closed to traffic, so your driver will meet you at the nearest permitted point and help with the bags from there. Give us your hotel name when you book.

Yes, there is room for it — just tell us how many containers when you book so we send a vehicle with space. It is worth counting it as luggage when choosing between a sedan and a van.

For more than a couple of passengers we usually suggest the 7-seater Hyundai Staria or the 11-seater Toyota Hiace rather than a sedan. Over four and a half hours the extra space makes a real difference, and both take considerably more luggage. See the full fleet for capacities.

Per vehicle. The price covers the whole car, so a family of four travelling by sedan pays the sedan price once. Adding passengers up to the vehicle's seat count does not change the fare.

Every booking on this route is 100% private. It is just you and your group — no shared rides, no strangers and no detours to collect other passengers.

Yes. Every fare is all-inclusive — fuel, tolls and parking are already covered. There is no meter and nothing extra is collected at the end of the journey.

Yes. A full-size GMC SUV is available for travellers who prefer a higher ride and a more executive finish. It is quoted per booking rather than at a fixed rate, so message us with your date and group size and we will confirm the fare.

Yes. Private Ziyarah tours of the historic sites around Madinah can be booked separately, with or without a guide — see Ziyarah in Makkah and Madinah, or mention it when you book this transfer.

No deposit is needed. Message us on WhatsApp with your Makkah hotel, travel date, Madinah hotel and group size. We reply with the fixed Makkah to Madinah taxi fare and confirm the vehicle, then you pay in cash at the end of the journey.
